How and why do attachments to soil matter? How do we engage anew with the sacralization of old and new forms of sovereignty? This initiative is an interdisciplinary engagement with the changing nature of theopolitical charisma and the formation of populist forces in multiple urban, historical emplacements. We cross boundaries between the Natural, Social and Human Sciences in attempting to grasp the significance of theological practices to political and social forms of living.<\/p>\n

This tri-campus University of Toronto Initiative is funded by a Connaught Global Challenge Award, which is meant to support engagement with pressing concerns of our times. Current constitutional crises in Europe, America and elsewhere indicate a profound lack of consensus not merely over recognition of authority, but also over the very discernment of what constitutes \u2018reality.\u2019 These crises of sovereignty are most obviously expressed in a number of interrelated phenomena, relating to questions of sovereign borders, beliefs, and belonging.<\/p>\n

Perception of increased and unregulated movement of migrants across political borders alongside moral and legal panics over how to respond to such displaced populations need to be interrogated through debates over the role of religion in disrupting or bolstering established forms of sovereignty, expressed most profoundly in questions over the effects of \u2018good\u2019 and \u2018bad\u2019 religious forms in public and civic life. Nationalist populisms may call for the \u2018restoration\u2019 of sovereignty by conflating religious and ethnic bases of identification, and such populisms frequently involve the displacement of one religious form by another. We respond to such developments by engaging fresh understandings of newly potent connections between exemplary forms of living, urban communities and theologies. We use theologies in the plural here to highlight their movement away from a single centre, generating different forms of sovereignty within and beyond Euro-American contexts.<\/p>\n

At the heart of this initiative is the attempt to examine how divine presences are being made salient anew in religious and political realms, embedded in long histories but also contemporary sensorial apprehension of places. Through workshops, seminars, interviews, training sessions and small grants, our aim is to foster the training and research of all participants in new forms of ethical engagements that take seriously, but not partisanly, the politics of sensing the divine by different social constituencies. Cette initiative interdisciplinaire se penche sur la nature changeante du charisme th\u00e9opolitique et sur l\u2019\u00e9mergence de courants populistes dans de multiples sites urbains et historiques. En tentant de saisir l\u2019influence des pratiques th\u00e9ologiques sur diff\u00e9rentes formes de vie politique et sociale, ce projet traverse les fronti\u00e8res qui s\u00e9parent les sciences naturelles, sociales et humaines.<\/p>\n

Men\u00e9e par les trois campus de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Toronto, cette initiative est financ\u00e9e par le Connaught Global Challenge Award, un prix destin\u00e9 \u00e0 soutenir les projets qui abordent les enjeux pressants de notre \u00e9poque. Les perceptions d\u2019un mouvement croissant et non-r\u00e9glement\u00e9 de migrants traversant les fronti\u00e8res politiques ainsi que les moments de panique morale et juridique suscit\u00e9s par les interrogations sur les mani\u00e8res de faire face \u00e0 ces populations d\u00e9plac\u00e9es doivent \u00eatre investigu\u00e9s par le biais de d\u00e9bats sur le r\u00f4le possible que joue la religion dans l\u2019affaiblissement ou le renforcement de diff\u00e9rentes formes de souverainet\u00e9 existantes. Ces d\u00e9bats touchent particuli\u00e8rement aux questionnements sur les effets que les \u00ab bonnes \u00bb ou \u00ab mauvaises \u00bb formes de religion peuvent avoir sur la vie publique et civique. Les modes de populisme nationalistes en appellent parfois \u00e0 un \u00ab r\u00e9tablissement \u00bb de la souverainet\u00e9, en faisant un amalgame entre les fondements religieux et ethniques de la d\u00e9finition identitaire. De plus, de tels populismes impliquent fr\u00e9quemment le remplacement d\u2019une forme de religion par une autre. Nous examinons ces ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes en proposant une nouvelle conceptualisation des r\u00e9cents et puissants liens entre formes de vie exemplaire, communaut\u00e9s urbaines et th\u00e9ologies. Nous employons le terme th\u00e9ologie au pluriel pour mettre l\u2019accent sur les th\u00e9ologies qui s\u2019\u00e9loignent d\u2019un centre unique et qui g\u00e9n\u00e8rent diff\u00e9rentes formes de souverainet\u00e9 au sein, mais aussi au-del\u00e0 des contextes Euro-Am\u00e9ricains.<\/p>\n

L\u2019objectif central de cette initiative est d\u2019examiner la fa\u00e7on dont diverses pr\u00e9sences divines se font redonner une importance significative dans les domaines religieux et politique et la fa\u00e7on dont elles sont ancr\u00e9es dans de longues trajectoires historiques, mais aussi dans une perception sensorielle et contemporaine des lieux. Atravesamos los l\u00edmites entre las Ciencias Naturales, Sociales y Humanas para procurar interpretar la repercusi\u00f3n de las pr\u00e1cticas teol\u00f3gicas en las formas de vida pol\u00edtica y social.<\/p>\n

Esta Iniciativa de tres universidades de Toronto, est\u00e1 financiada por el Connaught Global Challenge Award, la cual tiene como prop\u00f3sito apoyar el compromiso con las cuestiones urgentes de nuestro tiempo. Las recientes crisis constitucionales en Europa, Am\u00e9rica y otros pa\u00edses denotan un abismal carencia de consenso, no s\u00f3lo sobre el reconocimiento de la autoridad, sino tambi\u00e9n sobre el discernimiento de lo que constituye la “realidad”. Estas crisis de soberan\u00eda se expresan de manera m\u00e1s fehaciente en una serie de eventos interrelacionados, correspondientes a inquietudes con la soberan\u00eda de fronteras, creencias y pertenencia. La percepci\u00f3n del movimiento creciente y no regulado de los migrantes a trav\u00e9s de las fronteras pol\u00edticas, junto al p\u00e1nico moral y legal sobre c\u00f3mo responder a tales desplazamientos de poblaci\u00f3n, deben ser discutidos a trav\u00e9s de debates sobre el papel de la religi\u00f3n en la suspensi\u00f3n o reforzamiento de los procedimientos de soberan\u00eda establecidos, expresados con mayor profundidad en inquietudes sobre los efectos \u201cbuenos” y \u201cmalos” de la religi\u00f3n en la vida p\u00fablica y civil. Los populismos nacionalistas pueden exigir la “restauraci\u00f3n” de la soberan\u00eda mediante la combinaci\u00f3n de bases de identificaci\u00f3n religiosa y \u00e9tnica, y esos populismos a menudo implica el desplazamiento de un dogma religioso por otro. Respondemos a estos desarrollos utilizando teor\u00edas modernas de conexiones firmes entre las formas de vida ejemplares de las comunidades urbanas y teol\u00f3gicas. Aqu\u00ed utilizamos teolog\u00edas en forma plural para enfatizar su alejamiento a un s\u00f3lo centro, generando diferentes formas de soberan\u00eda dentro y fuera del contexto Euroamericano.<\/p>\n

El n\u00facleo de esta iniciativa est\u00e1 en el intento de examinar c\u00f3mo las presencias divinas se est\u00e1n destacando nuevamente en los \u00e1mbitos pol\u00edticos y religiosos, empotradas a lo largo de la historia, pero tambi\u00e9n en la asimilaci\u00f3n sensorial contempor\u00e1nea de los lugares.
